The results of the latest Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) were released on Tuesday, October 7, with more than 280,000 teachers from 55 education systems participating.
In Portugal, 94% of teachers say they are satisfied with their work, which is above the OECD average of 89%. Although the number of dissatisfied teachers is decreasing, many are considering changing professions. In Portugal, 66% of younger teachers say they chose teaching as their first career choice, but 27% are considering leaving the profession in the next five years (OECD average: 20%).
Compared to 2018, teachers now spend more time maintaining discipline in the classroom. In 2024, 21% of teachers in OECD countries reported facing behavioral problems in their classrooms. In Portugal, that percentage rises to 36%, with complaints of noise and disorder.
